NDP: Ford failing seniors in Long-Term care by falling short of care targets

QUEEN’S PARK – MPP Wayne Gates (Niagara Falls), Official Opposition critic for Long-term care (LTC), issued the following statement in response to reports that Ford’s Conservatives are unlikely to reach their senior care targets in LTC as a result of staffing shortages:

“Ford’s conservatives have broken yet another promise to Ontario’s seniors. Today we learned that Ford’s latest LTC minister was warned he would fall short on targets for senior care months ago and decided not to do anything about it.

Staffing shortages are having a huge impact on our LTC homes, with health care workers feeling burned out and unsupported. We should be doing everything in our power to recruit and retain the health care workers who care for our families and friends in LTC. Instead, Ford is failing them – and failing seniors.

The Ontario NDP has spent years fighting to ensure 4 hours of care for every resident in LTC, and we won’t stop until that’s a reality”.
